There are many ways to start a new year. For some it is all about resolutions, goal setting, and planning. For others, there are no marks of distinction between the changing times. Some say they like to go with the flow while others like the structure of a plan. The reality is that with intention, you can do both.

I challenge you to an exercise in reflection, wherein the fruit of the effort lay the seeds to building your 2023 with intention.

Consider the landscape of 2022 as it relates to not just the broader world, but to you specifically. Take a moment to look back at the year that has transpired and around at the present reality in which you find yourself.

Here is a metaphor to get started. If a small pebble tumbles swiftly into a rushing river, the impact may be small. If however, a boulder barrels into that same rushing river, the water experiences a significant impact that could effect a shift in course. Neither is good or bad, they simply are. Now, imagine that you are the river. What impacts moved you last year?

As you consider these impacts, also observe how you reacted to each of those moments. How have those moments of impact shaped your present? Are you feeling whole and fulfilled? Are you struggling? Have barriers been erected or released? Are there lessons you’ve gained? Opportunities to do things differently?

Here is a template you can use to reflect with intention.

Life will never cease throwing pebbles, rocks, and boulders into our paths. There is no choice in this. If there is one thing we know for sure, it is that change is constant. Where choice blossoms however is in how we respond to these occurrences. This happens, with intention.

And so, with a wealth of your own history before you, consider where you want to see change and begin to not just build but evolve your vision for 2023 around these areas.

Herein emerges the magic of both flow and structure. By being intentional through our moments of impact we bring structure, while simultaneously maintaining the flexibility of going with the flow.

What will you choose for 2023?
